A mother and child escaped to safety as fire and thick smoke filled their kitchen.
A pan of fat caught fire at their home in Findon Road, Whitehawk, Brighton, shortly after 9pm yesterday.
They were alerted by a smoke detector and called the brigade before leaving the building.
A fire crew from Roedean stopped the flames spreading to other rooms but the kitchen was badly damaged.
