I was distressed to see the comments about the St Paul's war memorial, Worthing.

The Sentinel has yet again failed to establish the facts before publishing an article.

As I have said on several occasions in the past, we in the Parish of Christ the King are well aware of our responsibility to ensure the war memorial is both preserved and kept in good order.

Our plans for the finished St Paul's Project ensure that the war memorial will be central in the garden area at the front of the new building.

We are deliberately waiting to clean up the war memorial until after the building work is completed so the memorial can then be cleaned and remain in good condition.

We are delighted the Mayor has promised that Worthing Borough Council will support us in the cleaning programme.

Andrea Virgo, for the Reverend Garry Guinness, Parish of Christ the King, Worthing

-* Editor's note: Perhaps the following two questions can be answered - why has the Parish of Christ the King allowed the memorial to deteriorate (over the years) to such an extent and why should the council have to foot at least part of the bill when the memorial and its upkeep is clearly the responsibility of the Church of England? What would the mothers of those poor boys listed on the memorial think if they were alive to see its shocking deterioration?
