Two friends from Brighton have been passing on their information technology skills to people in Uganda.

Teresa Gane, 31, and Mary Berridge, 48, exchanged their daily Brighton to London commute for a two-minute walk to work down a dirt track in the capital Kampala.

The IT trainers spent a month passing on their skills to local trainers so they in turn can make IT accessible to local people, particularly the disadvantaged and marginalised.

Teresa and Mary are colleagues at London-based IT training company Happy Computers, which allows staff a number of days each year to work with small voluntary organisations.

They offered their services at a community centre for IT, set up to help Africans develop their own skills and expertise.

The centre concentrates on helping young people, women, refugees and those with disabilities.

Mary, of Montpelier Crescent, Brighton, said: "Access to IT courses and training are taken for granted in the West.

"I felt I had the skills which would help make training and IT more accessible to people who might otherwise not have access at all. I was overwhelmed by the friendship and warmth of the people, many of whom still keep in touch."

Teresa, of Wellington Road, Brighton, said IT skills were in high demand in Africa, adding: "Funding is still desperately needed so please contact me at teresa@happy.co.uk if you would like to find out more."
