I agree with Adam Trimingham (November 14) that the Church of England is under threat and not just from its main adversary, the Devil.

According to a large recent survey, half the clergy does not believe that faith in Jesus is the only way of salvation, and a third does not believe in the resurrection.

In addition, we have a new Archbishop who does not believe in the authority of scripture, the articles of faith or Church law and who has flouted the main resolution of the last Lambeth conference, yet in office it will be his duty to maintain discipline by upholding these laws.

I can only thank God for those who do believe.

The Church is also under attack from outside by the Government and other politicians abetted by much of the media, through their secular agendas, so-called rights culture and social legislation. They seem to be hell-bent on eliminating Christian belief from our country.

However, I totally disagree with Adam on what should be done about it. Good works, such as those carried out by the organisations he mentions and many others, will not turn the situation round, much needed as they are.

What we must understand is that many in this generation - but not all - are not just rejecting the Church. They are rejecting Jesus himself, who went to the cross to save us from the judgement we will all have to face.

The Church's main task is what it has always been, getting us all to recognise our own sinful nature, our rebellion against God and the necessity of repentance, to acknowledge our need of a saviour and to lead us to that eternal life which can only be found in Jesus Christ. Then the good works will flow.

See you in church, Adam.
