Having recently completed a journey through the roadworks on the A27 at Falmer in either direction, I must challenge the legality of the signs displayed.
The approach to the roadworks in either direction is correctly signed. However, my point rests with the way the temporary speed limit ends. A large triangular warning sign with "end" appended to it cannot cancel a temporary speed limit.
In effect, the roadworks are not correctly returned from a temporary 40mph speed limit to the national speed limit since the triangular roaworks warning sign advising "end" is followed by the return of the small national speed limit repeater signs; between these two a large national speed limit sign must be displayed to legally reinstate the national speed limit to 70mph.
If the signs do not conform, the temporary speed limit order becomes unlawful, as does any enforcement by speed cameras or otherwise.
