Controversial moves to run a cycle lane along Worthing promenade will be scrutinised on Monday.

Three Conservative Worthing borough councillors called in a recent executive decision to approve a promenade cycle route between George V Avenue and West Buildings in Worthing because they felt it should be a matter for the whole council to consider.

On October 28, Worthing executive had voted four to two in favour of placing a new cycle lane along the seafront walkway and asked council officers to make detailed designs for an off-road cycle route from West Buildings to Splash Point.

In their call-in statement, Tory leader Brian Lynn, Councillor David Chapman and Councillor Kit Wingate said: "It is considered that the decisions of the executive to agree to the preferred location for the cycle route between George V Avenue and West Buildings being along the promenade is premature given the wide and strongly held views by sections of the public both for and against having cyclists on the promenade.

"It is felt that the matter should be referred to full council to make the final decision."

The efforts to introduce the cycle lane are part of a national scheme to promote cycling, which in turn could help ease traffic congestion and encourage people to lead a healthier lifestyle.

The executive's move to run a cycle route on the pavement between Ham Road and Western Road, in East Worthing, was not called in.

A seafront route from George V Avenue to Sea Lane, Ferring, is yet to be finalised.

The call-in will come before the scrutiny committee for policy at 6pm in the town hall.
