Military crews standing in for striking firefighters had a quiet night in Mid Sussex, but Green Goddesses were busy in other areas.

Royal Navy personnel tackled a moped in flames in Dickens Way, Eastbourne.

And an hour later they fought the biggest blaze of the night, a garden shed with two motorbikes inside in Malvern Close, Eastbourne. An electrical fault was blamed.

Conifers were set ablaze near All Saints School, Sidley, near Bexhill, at 10.15pm. One Green Goddess crew brought the outbreak under control.

Just before 1am, a chip pan caught fire in a flat above Sidley post office but the owner extinguished the flames before a Green Goddess arrived.

Police dealt with a car fire in Battle Road, Hastings, at 1.11am.

At 3am, a Green Goddess crew went to an accident on the A26 north of Ringmer, Lewes. The driver of a Transco gas van was trapped but the 44-year-old Worthing man, who had head injuries, was freed before the Navy arrived.

A retained East Sussex Fire Brigade crew from Pevensey dealt with a rubbish store fire on a farm on the A259 near Bexhill at 5.25am.

And at just after 7am two Green Goddess crews put out an abandoned car on fire off St Helens Wood Road, Hastings.
