A vegetarian teenager's efforts to convert her stepbrothers to a meat-free diet have been filmed for a children's TV show.

Hannah Barlow, 13, was caught on camera giving one of them a roasting after he broke a week-long ban on eating meat.

Hannah's bid to convert her stepbrothers Connor and Tommy to vegetarianism was recorded for Children's ITV show Out There.

The only meat allowed in the house was a packet of ham, as a temptation - which ultimately proved too much for eight-year-old Tommy.

After a meal of ratatouille, Tommy was spotted sneaking back into the kitchen to steal the few scraps of ham from the fridge.

Hannah chased him upstairs, yelling at him, but he gobbled down the meat as he ran.

She said: "I thought it was a bit silly of him - he must have known he would be caught. I wasn't very happy at him for cheating."

Hannah's first tactic in her veggie offensive was to slip provocative facts about health fears and animal cruelty into conversation.

She then introduced the brothers to tasty vegetarian alternatives to meat but they turned up their noses as treats such as houmous sandwiches.

She also took the boys to a farm and pointed out the cute animals they admired and petted were no different from those on their dinner-plates.

But it was all to no avail - the boys are still determined carnivores.

Hannah said: "Tommy was quite shocked when he thought about the farmyard animals he was eating but they're adamant they won't give up meat. I think they're lost causes."

The challenge was filmed over a half-term week last February, and will be broadcast on Thursday at 4.05pm.

Hannah, who lives with her mother in Stanmer Park Road, Brighton, had volunteered for the show after her school advertised for a vegetarian interested in taking part - and she seemed to be the only one.

The Brighton and Hove High School pupil became a vegetarian six years ago, following the lead of her sister Amy, 18.

According to her mother Christine, Hannah does not usually try to browbeat others into giving meat a miss.

Christine, who is not a vegetarian, said: "She doesn't go on about it all the time - she thinks people should be allowed to pick and choose."

Hannah said: "When I feels strongly about something, I'm not afraid to speak my mind."
