Hastings skipper Tony Burt says his side's astonishing FA Cup victory has got the town buzzing.

Burt, 34, lives and works in Hastings and has been overwhelmed by the public reaction to United's 5-0 win at Kettering on Tuesday.

It earned Hastings a place in the first round and a trip to Stevenage later this month and Burt is thrilled.

He said: "We were delighted with the result, it is the first time most of us will have played at that stage of the competition.

"It has always been one of my ambitions to play in the first round and this is certainly one of the most memorable periods I can remember in the 16 years I have been playing non-league football.

"The cup run seems to have got everyone in the town interested. I've had people who I have never spoken to before coming up to me about it.

"The result has put a lot of focus onto the club and the town. It is nice to be part of it and we want to keep it going as long as possible. We'll take a few supporters up to Stevenage and we might even be able to sneak into the second round."

The margin of Hastings' victory in midweek shocked everybody after the two sides played out a dour 0-0 draw on Saturday at the Pilot Field.

Goals from Landry Zahana-Oni (2), Stuart Playford, Steve Yates and Ellis Remy set Hastings on their way to an historic win against the Conference's bottom team.

Burt added: "The only disappointing thing was that we didn't do it at home in front of a great crowd.

"I thought we were superb in the replay and we often seem to reserve our best performances for away from home.

"The third goal was the killer, after that we were in total control. Everybody played fantastically and it was an excellent all round performance against a well organised Kettering side.

"We could have drawn a league club in the first round which George wanted but we have got another Conference side who are not dissimilar to Kettering and we have a real chance to beat them.

"Stevenage were at the game against Kettering and they'll probably be frightened to death after our display."

The only sour note of the evening for Hastings was a car crash before the game involving midfielder Paul Ruddy who missed the match. Ruddy escaped unscathed and is in the squad for tomorrow's FA Trophy match with Chelmsford City.
