The screening of Chloe Flynn's new digital film, State Of The Nation, is part of the Hospital festival developed by Lighthouse Media Centre.

The film links a series of urban photographs found on packaging, labels, signage and graffiti projected against a backdrop of electronic-folk music.

Statements emerge from the collage of words that reflect Flynn's thoughts about the state of society. Text rich with multiple meanings and interpretations is formed out of this diverse type.

Flynn, who recently graduated in illustration from Brighton University: "We unconsciously digest type all around us. We do the same with everyday events that reflect the situation our society is in.

"We are surrounded by much sorrow, poverty and tragedy but often choose to ignore it in our desire for happiness and an undisturbed life."

Evelyn Wilson, Creative and Executive Director of Hospital, was immediately struck by Flynn's film.

"It's refreshing to have such a young artist creating such strong work when much of Brit Art is so empty," says Wilson.

"She has produced meaning and a message very simply about real issues. She is prepared to make a statement at a point when few are."

Wilson says the film provides a look at today's society and asks the viewer to confront issues that exist outside the comfort zone.

"In our ever increasing desire to create the illusion of happy, perfected lives, we mostly choose to ignore the conditions of hardship, poverty and exclusion that form the underbelly of contemporary global culture. State Of The Nation crafts together pieces of typography to create a series of pertinent reminders that things are not as perfect as we would like to believe."
