Vandals have caused damage costing hundreds of pounds at a Eastbourne Crematorium.

Doors to a store room and a storage area were targeted at the crematorium, in Hide Hollow.

Damage has been estimated at more than £300 but nothing is believed to have been stolen during the incident on Sunday at 5.45pm.

A spokesman for Eastbourne Council, which runs the crematorium said: "Damage was caused to several doors and storage areas but it must be stressed the books of remembrance and memorials were all untouched during the incident.

"Immediate steps were taken to make the premises secure."

Police believe people tending graves near the main building may have seen the vandals and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The crematorium opened in January 1960. Its grounds were sculpted to look like the rolling Sussex downsland.

Books of remembrance are the only permanent memorials at the crematorium.

For a charge, relatives can place an entry to view on anniversaries or special occasions.
