Mobile phone masts have been put on the map after a two-year campaign by The Argus.

A map showing every mobile phone mast in Brighton and Hove has been produced by the city council.

It is now on the council's web site and copies will be available at council information centres in Bartholomew Square, Brighton, Hove Town Hall on Western Road and in local libraries.

The council agreed to draw up the map last September, one year after we began our campaign, but it has taken another 12 months of detailed work by officers to find all the locations.

The Argus launched its Put Masts On The Map campaign after being inundated with requests from readers concerned no organisation or authority could tell them the location of masts.

The map, which gives locations rather than details of individual masts, has been drawn up by the council's planning policy team.

Councillor Roy Pennington, chairman of Brighton and Hove's planning applications sub-committee, said: "This is an example of the council responding to residents' concerns and our commitment to improving the planning service.

"Some of the anxiety around mobile phone masts has arisen because people do not know where they are.

"The map will be widely available and improve our understanding. All the masts identified meet safety guidelines.

"It will also help councillors on the planning applications sub-committee when making decisions on new masts."

Speaking at yesterday's planning applications sub-committee meeting, acting chairman Councillor Bob Carden said: "It looks like Brighton and Hove with chickenpox."
