Sussex have increased Peter Moores' powers at the county by promoting him to director of cricket.

It means Moores will have responsibilities for all aspects of cricket from youth development through to his current role as first team coach.

Moores, who became coach in 1998 after 14 years on the playing staff, signed a four-year contract in August when it emerged that Warwickshire were lining him up as replacement for Bob Woolmer.

He will report to another former Sussex captain John Barclay who is the link man between the committee and cricket operations at Hove.

Chairman David Green said: "Peter's new responsilbilities are for the whole of the cricket side. He will continue in his role as coach of the first team but we are making sure he has a lot more support in that particular role."

The committee met last night to define Moores' role more clearly and decide how much it would impinge on his current duties with the first team.

Meanwhile, Hugh Griffiths looks set to land the job of chief executive on a full-time basis.

Green confirmed today that the club have no plans to advertise for a successor to Nigel Russell who left the club on Monday by mutual consent after just three months in the job.

Griffiths, the club's operations manager, stood in for six months last year and is comfortable in the role.
