East Grinstead tasted sweet revenge as they returned to winning ways with a 3-2 success at Oxford Hawks in National League division two.

Last season Grinstead lost twice to Oxford Hawks but those defeats were put behind them with a victory which was easier than the score suggests.

Having lost to Bowdon the previous week, it was imperative that Grinstead got off to a good start, which they did, winning a short corner in the first two minutes.

Grinstead dominated the first half, creating several chances which were wasted.

Finally, Ben Payne broke the deadlock with a reverse stick shot from the top of the D.

Steve Edmonds then netted a second from a scramble to claim his first goal for the club and Mike Holland deflected in a third in the dying seconds.

In an open second half Oxford threw caution to the wind but Grinstead still had the best chances and should have put the result beyond doubt. However, it was Oxford who scored and then got a second to set up a tense finish.

Captain Dom Male said: "Overall it was our best performance of the season and we could easily have scored six or more but if we don't put our chances away we will always give the opposition some hope."

Lewes had a miserable day as they lost 5-1 away to Hounslow and Ealing and team manager Paul Benoy had his car broken in to.

Having fallen behind early on when keeper Rory Jervis was nutmegged, Lewes levelled on 32 minutes when skipper Will Champness scored from a short corner.

Hounslow scored again two minutes later and added three more in the second half when Lewes defenders Champness and Ryan Standing were both yellow carded.

Benoy said: "Our form was improving but we went downhill rapidly this weekend.

"We didn't really listen to what our coach had to say and we didn't play the game plan we were meant to."
