Taxi fares are expected to rise again in Brighton and Hove later this year.

The unified taxi trade has made an application to the city council, which will be considered on Thursday.

Members of the licensing committee are being recommended to approve the bid, which will affect extras rather than basic fares.

If agreed, the Sunday charge and late night extra charge between 10pm and 6am will rise from 60p to 80p. Bank holiday charges will rise from 80p to £1.

Increases in mileage rates took place last November but the last rises in extras took place in 1995 and 1998.

The taxi trade says it is hard to get drivers to work unsocial hours and the increases may help ease the pressure.

Its application said: "It is clear that drivers avoid working at certain times of the week, resulting in a poor service for the city.

"It is only human nature for them to target the more lucrative and convenient times to work. Our proposal is to address the imbalance by adjusting the timed extras."
