An airline customer service manager who punched a bar doorman after being thrown out has been ordered to pay his victim £100 compensation.

Nigel Jones, 36, of Chatsworth Road, Brighton, admitted assaulting doorman Richard Maskery at the Snafu bar in Church Road, Hove.

He was fined £400 by Brighton magistrates and ordered to pay £55 costs as well as the compensation.

The court heard Jones, senior customer services manager with British Airways, has no previous convictions and had never been arrested before.

Trouble flared with security staff after Jones, who was dancing without his shirt on, was asked to put his top back on. He refused and became aggressive when they tried to eject him from the bar.

David Packer, prosecuting, said Jones had to be restrained in an arm lock by security staff and was shouting out: "You are homophobic bastards."

Mr Maskery described Jones' behaviour to police in a statement. He said: "He seemed like a man possessed as he was jumping up and down like a lunatic."

Outside the club Jones punched Mr Maskery in the face. Sarah Smith, defending, said Jones was totally appalled by his behaviour that night and apologised to the court.

She said it was normal behaviour at gay clubs for men to dance with their shirts off and he objected when asked to put his back on.

"He refused. He felt they were being homophobic. He was very angry at being ejected," she said.
