I am glad to see Adur District Council's planners are in agreement with residents that West Sussex County Council (WSCC) should not give itself yet another planning permission for the waste centre at Halewick Lane (The Argus, October 2).

WSCC has for too long ignored its promises to Sompting people to relocate the tip.

The council's spokeswoman is not being truthful saying WSCC is not being idle in wanting the site moved as soon as possible. WSCC commissioned a company to find alternative sites and this was completed in July. If WSCC is so eager to close the site, why is it not making the results of the search public now, instead of waiting until the draft Waste Local Plan is published next spring?

And why is it making the entire relocation programme the responsibility of whoever takes on the waste contract, thereby passing the buck for its own lack of action on closing the site.

It was agreed at an earlier meeting with residents that the activities on the site could be split over different sites and that some parts could therefore close earlier than others. There are alternative licensed sites available now which are large enough for the civic amenity site to be moved in a very short space of time. Why is WSCC not taking up this option?
