I am delighted Brighton's Clock Tower will finally be unveiled in all its glory in the near future. It's about time.
Brighton and Hove City Council was sitting on a generous donation from Boots the chemist for a number of years, which was given specifically to renovate this much-loved local landmark.
Like many other significant local heritage sites in the city, it has been a disgraceful eye-sore for too long.
Now the council has seen fit to repair the Clock Tower, can we please see a rapid agreement to restore the West Pier before it collapses into the sea forever?
It should then be a priority for our councillors to turn their attention to restoring the rest of the promenade, with a speedy resolution to the Black Rock site, additional resources to clear the streets of graffiti and the beaches of camp fires and to ensure household refuse is collected promptly and regularly.
Only then should we be even considering spending local residents' hard-earned cash on bids to be a Capital of Culture. Currently, there's an obsession with seeking grand titles for the city, while what really makes our city grand is being left to rot - literally.
