Cricketers fear their club's centenary celebrations will be ruined by worries about their crumbling clubhouse.

Members of the Crescent Cricket Club have made regular complaints about the pavilion at the Horsdean Recreation Ground off Vale Avenue, Patcham.

But they say little has been done about filthy conditions, broken guttering, cold-water showers and a lack of ladies' toilets.

The club is planning a series of high-profile events to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year.

But Simon Wood, fixtures secretary of The Crescent, said: "Everyone will be a bit wary of inviting people here because the facilities are so bad."

The main room of the pavilion has a dirty concrete floor, and several dozen broken chairs have been left along one side of the wall. A large piece of black guttering fell off the roof more than a month ago but has not been repaired.

Mr Wood said: "It would be nice to have somewhere where the showers worked, the toilets and kitchens were usable and we could provide good teas for visitors."

Mr Wood is also secretary of the Brighton Hove and District Cricket Association and allocates venues where teams can play games.

He said: "I worry clubs are going to be forced out of playing in Brighton because the grounds are so poor.

"We're desperately trying to encourage more young people to take up the sport. But these conditions don't help."

A Brighton and Hove council spokesman said: "We take these kinds of comments seriously. We do record them and will address them as soon as funding allows.

"Unfortunately, there's never enough cash available to meet all these requests for improvements at once."
