Ambitious plans to build a health and fitness centre with on-site parking in Eastbourne are set to be approved.

The three-storey club would include a swimming pool, spa tank, sauna, bar, gym, fitness and aerobics rooms.

Building plans have been submitted for 1.5 acres of land north of Willingdon Drove in Hampden Park.

Officers at Eastbourne Borough Council are recommending the plans be approved when the planning and licensing committee meets on Tuesday.

The 12.5m-high blue brick building would have a curved roof with more than 115 car parking spaces nearby, including seven disabled bays.

The 23,300sqft club would open from 7am until 11pm.

It would also feature a mind and body room and a steam room.

More than 100 letters were sent out to neighbours explaining the application.

Two residents in Lakeside Court and Lakelands Close expressed fears about loss of privacy, increased noise and disturbance.

They said the proposal would be an inappropriate development for a residential area.

Tourism bosses believe the new centre would aid the council's bid to attract more investment into the town.

A raft of conditions will be attached if approval is granted, including a stipulation that building work must start within five years.

The planning and licensing committee will meet at the town hall in Grove Road on Tuesday at 4.30pm.
