Two more Brighton and Hove city councillors have said they will not be standing again for different reasons.

For Labour's Susan Joy it is a matter of conscience. For Rik Child, of the Greens, it is a matter of money.

Coun Joy will no longer have to struggle with her conscience over conflict with Iraq now she is quitting the Labour Party but Tony Blair and the Government will still have to deal with the most intractable foreign policy problem of the last decade.

Coun Child will be able to go out and earn a decent living rather than exist on the £8,000 annual allowance he says is not enough.

It is true that £8,000 is not enough to live on in Brighton and Hove but there are three councillors in each ward and that should not be a full-time job.

The number of councillors will be cut from 78 to 54 in May. Reduce that figure to one a ward in future. That would be a full-time job and they could then be paid accordingly.
