Former Tour de France stage winner Sean Yates, from Forest Row, won the Epsom CC 25-mile time trial in the Horsham area by almost three minutes.

Yates (Team Clean) stormed round in 51min.44sec. Former national record holder Eddie Adkins (Bournmouth Arrow) recorded 54min.42sec for second place. Third was Guildford clubman Gary Wells (Charlottesville) with 55min.39sec.

Brighton's Mike Coyle (VC Etoile) was fourth in 55min.52sec. Mark Bashford (East Grinstead) finished sixth in 56min.33sec. Geoff Smith (Sussex Nomads) placed eighth in 58min.16sec and Lewes rider Carl Whitaker (In Gear) and Frank Lawler (Crawley Wheelers) both clocked 58min.52sec to finish equal 11th.

Seventy-year-old Harry Featherstone (Eastbourne Rovers) continues to amaze riders half his age, although he said he was disappointed with his time of 1hr.0min.51sec.

He said: "My best time this year is 57min.11sec."

Angela Nainby (East Grinstead) crowned a good day for Sussex by emulating Yates and winning the women's event by almost three minutes in 1hr.1min.38sec.

Stuart Aspinall and Michael Thyer, of Southwater Cycles, finished first and second overall in the South East veterans' mountain bike series.

Paul Fox and Chris Stocks (21st Century Airports) won the corporate category event in the Duo Norman International two-up time trial held in Normandy. Linda Stocks and Debbie Shaw finished tenth in the women's event.

Forty-seven teams will be taking part in the Lewes Wanderers 18-mile veterans' time trial at Laughton on Sunday. The start is at 9am.

The first round of the Sussex Cyclo-cross League also takes place on Sunday at Deers Leap Park, Saints Hill Green, near East Grinstead.

There are three races for the under-16s from 11am and the hour-long main event starts at 1pm. Riders can enter on the line for all events.

Sussex officials are hoping Britain's three gold medals in the world track championships in Denmark will spark increased interest in the Preston Park track league next summer.
