Lewes skipper Will Champness endured a day to forget on and off the pitch as his side suffered a 3-1 reverse at Bowdon in National League Division Two.

Champness was at fault for two of the home side's goals and he then took eight hours to get back to Sussex after his car broke down.

Champness's car shuddered to a halt outside Birmingham to cap a miserable day for the visitors' captain.

He said: "I don't think any of us particularly enjoyed it. The others all took six hours to get back because of the traffic but I was very annoyed my car broke down because it is quite new."

Champness gifted Bowdon the lead in the first half before equalising with 15 minutes left from a short corner.

However a goal four minutes from time and a further effort on the final whistle following an intercepted pass from the Lewes skipper sealed a 3-1 win for Bowdon.

It could have been worse, but goalkeeper Rory Jervis made some terrific saves in the first half and midfielder Danny Poulsen played well in his first game for nearly a year.

"They weren't that good," added Champness. "We didn't play well in the first half but the second half was better and they were worried when we equalised."
