A teenager was appearing in court today charged with the murder of a man found bleeding to death in a street.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was due before Lewes Youth Court.

He was charged last night with the murder of Scott Wadman, 24, of Gibbon Road, Newhaven, who was found in the same road early on Saturday morning.

He is thought to have suffered a stab wound to the chest.

Paramedics spent 15 minutes trying to revive Mr Wadman but he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Detective Chief Inspector Reg Hooke, leading the investigation, said officers were still searching the area for a knife.

He said: "I'm asking people in Gibbon Road and the surrounding streets to check their rubbish bins and their gardens for this large knife.

"If you find the knife, please don't touch and call the police instead."

Detectives cordoned off the scene around a semi-detached, cream-coloured council house halfway along the street.

The front and rear windscreens of a blue Ford Mondeo parked in the driveway were smashed.

One resident said: "It's a quiet street without much trouble."
