Standen near East Grinstead was one of the first houses in England to have electric light and the owners wanted to show off about it.
They put in big bulbs and ornate light fittings to make the point they they were in the modern age while neighbours were not.
How fashions change. In many houses today, when owners want to impress their guests, they turn off all the bulbs and light candles.
