Another lamentable batting display was to blame for Sussex Sharks signing off the season with another defeat.

Yesterday's Norwich Union League clash against Essex Eagles at Chelmsford was their tenth defeat in the competition.

Chasing a modest 188-victory target in 42 overs under the Duckworth Lewis system, Sussex were bowled out for 158 inside 39 overs and lost their last eight wickets while adding 59.

Only when Murray Goodwin and debutant Neil Turk were together did the visitors look likely to repeat the success achieved when the two counties met at Horsham in June.

Coming together after Graham Napier had removed Richard Montgomerie and Tony Cottey with only 16 on the board, they added 83 in 15 overs.

Montgomerie was the chief aggressor as he drove with authority through and over the top of fielders on his way to a 39-ball half-century. Turk, an upright left-hander who plays for East Grinstead, distinguished himself with a 36 from 72 deliveries.

Sussex's performance left much to be desired, but Paul Hutchison had something to smile about following an injury-ravaged summer. He claimed 3-38, including the wicket of Mark Waugh.
