A new police custody centre has invested in air-vented lockers for detainees' shoes in a bid to take the stink out of the clink.
The new foot lockers are at Centenary House, Durrington, Worthing.
Chief Inspector Bruce Matthews said when prisoners were taken into the old suite they were asked to remove their shoes as a safety precaution as they could be used as weapons.
As a result, the pong outside the cells became unbearable.
He said: "Now we have these new lockers it won't be a problem."
The suite is part of a £99 million contract in Sussex, with similar centres opening in Chichester, Brighton and Eastbourne.
The Durrington centre has 19 cells, double the number of the old one, digital CCTV throughout, three interview rooms and facilities for the disabled and people with special needs.
Instead of the traditional bunches of keys, guards will carry a single swipe card allowing access to all different parts of the block.
