Hundreds of people have given their support for a controversial design for an historic maritime area.

Architect Kathryn Findlay developed plans for a £3 million futuristic-looking building on the the Stade in Old Town, Hastings, which were put on public display last month.

The building split the Old Town community. Some applauded its wavy design, while others condemned it as looking like a Star Wars prop.

More than 2,000 people attended exhibitions showcasing the plans at the Fisherman's Museum and St Mary-in-the-Castle.

Of the 699 questionnaires completed, 52 per cent supported or strongly supported the initial designs, while 45 per cent disagreed.

Some had misgivings about the effect the building's height would have across the sea and fishing beach and along Rock-a-Nore Road.

Councillor Mike Bigg, Cabinet member for regeneration and tourism on Hastings Borough Council, said people's views would be taken on board.

He said: "A lot of work is now being put in by Kathryn Findlay and her project team, looking in particular at different positions for the building itself within the site and its overall size.

"Revised plans are expected in a few weeks. Further exhibitions will then be held, both in the Old Town and in the town centre, to get the widest possible public involvement in this scheme."
