I would like to reassure A Older (Letters, September 18) that Brighton and Hove City Council is keeping its promise with regard to the renovation of the arches, railings, shelters and benches along the East Brighton seafront.
A major refurbishment contract, which ran from the Aquarium to the Madeira Lift, was completed in spring 2001, as promised.
In addition, a substantial amount of renovation works was carried out to the benches along the Middle Terrace.
The next phase, mentioned recently and to be carried out this autumn, will include the restoration of the Victorian shelters and benches along Marine Parade.
My colleagues and I are also campaigning for the full restoration of the Madeira Lift, improvements to the Peter Pan site and a quality development at Black Rock.
-Coun Gill Mitchell, King's Cliff ward, Brighton
