We had nothing to do with the dramatic photograph of estate agents' boards laid out on Brunswick Square, Hove (The Argus, September 13), which some people might regard as an act of vandalism in aid of a good cause.

However, we can assure readers we have not been idle. With the Kemp Town Society and Friends of Palmeira and Adelaide, we have been trying for some time to persuade the relevant officials of Brighton and Hove City Council to propose a regulation which makes it almost impossible for estate agents' boards to be displayed on Grade I listed buildings in certain areas.

With the continuous support of Councillor Paul Elgood and a most valuable intervention by Councillor Chris Morley, this was agreed by the relevant council committee a few weeks ago.

But before this can become law, there has to be a period of public consultation.

There will soon be an exhibition in both Brighton and Hove and residents in the affected area will be receiving a questionnaire. We very much hope they will respond quickly.

After that, the council's recommendation will be sent to the Secretary of State for his approval, which we trust will be given.
