Security guards monitoring travellers as they left a site watched as they took up residence on another.
About 13 vehicles moved from Palatine Park in Worthing on to school playing fields belonging to Worthing College yesterday.
Several summer holiday clubs including a creche are being held at the college.
Police negotiated with the travellers and they moved on within an hour.
Inspector Steve Eldridge said: "We negotiated with them and they agreed the playing fields were not a good place to stay."
