A four-year-old girl was discovered lying unconscious in the back garden of a house in Eastbourne after falling from a window.
The child, of Churchdale Road, was flown by police helicopter from Eastbourne District General Hospital to a children's hospital specialising in head injuries in Wimbledon, south London.
The child was discovered yesterday at 2pm.
Scenes of crime officers scoured the garden and house for evidence while police guarded the building until late yesterday evening.
Police believed the girl fell from a first-floor window but this morning had not released any further information surrounding the circumstances.
A statement from Eastbourne police said a team of officers was investigating how the girl fell.
