An East Sussex football fan collapsed and died in the street after a day out with friends.

An inquest into the death of Christopher Byrne, known as Barney, was held yesterday at Eastbourne.

The court heard Mr Byrne, 42, of Trevor Gardens, Glynde, near Lewes, had been to watch Chelsea play at home in London and returned to Lewes on the evening of May 11.

In a statement from friend Justin Lawrence, of Downsway, Berwick, he said he saw Mr Byrne pacing back and forth before collapsing in East Gate Street, Lewes.

Coroner Brendan Salsbury said traces of ecstasy, alcohol and cocaine had been found in Mr Byrne's blood and urine samples but he had died from a heart attack.

He delivered a verdict of death from natural causes.
