Matthew Hume led Horsham to their second Sussex Junior Festival title of the summer with a man-of-the-match display.

Hume top-scored with 58 as Horsham claimed the under-14s' Bowl following last week's success for the under-16s.

In the 40-overs-a-side final at Glynde and Beddingham, Hume helped Horsham to 154 against Littlehampton who finished on 141-6.

Matthew, 13, said: "It was a tight finish but we deserved it.

"I was happy with the way I batted in the final and the rest of the tournament. I managed to get a few runs against Crawley and Three Bridges in our group.

"It was especially good for me because I was in the Horsham under-12s team which beat Eastbourne to win at the Festival last year."

Manager Jeff Clark said: "We needed someone to push the score along and Matthew showed his attacking style. He got 24 runs from one over.

"Matthew is physically well developed for his age and has performed for Horsham Second XI already.

"It wasn't a one-man team. Everyone played their part throughout the whole week. Captain James Jupp hit 60, Tom Hayward got 70 and William Beer 34. Five of the side were either under-13 or under-12.

"We all feel for Alex Birchmore, who missed the festival because of a broken arm, so hopefully our win will cheer him up."

Jeff's sons, Edward and Joe, were in the winning side.

He said: "We've got a good set-up and reputation, plus the enthusiasm of president Dr John Dew, who helps draw youngsters from outlying villages. We've got more than 200 youngsters."

Littlehampton's Chris Kirkham claimed a hat-trick, all clean bowled.
