Be patient, fellow residents and motorists of Brighton. Things will get better if motorists comply with the new traffic movement layouts finally under construction on the Lewes Road.

While the works are irritating, they will be worth it in the long run.

There will be only two lanes on Union Road going east from the Open Market.

The existing (third) right-turn-only lane south into the Lewes Road will be removed. Only left turns into Lewes Road will be possible.

Hanover Crescent will therefore reverse its private one-way traffic. This deletes a complete phase of traffic lights, reducing waiting times.

There will be only two lanes at the bottom of Elm Grove, one lane each for left and right turns into the Lewes Road.

The existing middle turn-left-only lane into Lewes Road will be removed. This deletes yet another complete phase of traffic lights, with similar efficiency resulting.

Lewes Road between Elm Grove and the Vogue Gyratory will be single-file traffic in both directions. No more erratic and dangerous overtaking from spasmodic two lanes into one.

Bus stops have already been upgraded in readiness for the single-file flow.

The Lewes Road will have side-street entry and exit reductions, cast-iron bollards and pavement build-outs to provide space for loading bays, as in the London Road scheme.

Red-lane cycle routes will be provided on the nearside in each direction. This should stop selfish illegal parkers and allow the traffic to flow more quickly.

So, let's be very patient for the several months ahead (improvements at Elm Grove and Union Road junctions will take four months alone). Things can only get better.
