Lewes Bridgeview have won the prestigious Manchester Umbro International Under-11s seven-a side Cup.

They pipped Fife 1-0 when Steven Brinkhurst's shot from a Jayson Sowter pass hit the post and rebounded in off a defender.

Bridgeview, winners of a Sussex Sunday Under-11s League and Cup double, began their group matches with a fine 2-0 win against Newcastle (Burradon), Brinkhurst and Sowter scoring. They lost 1-0 to Fife before goals by Brinkhurst and Neil Grant helped them overcome Hartlepool (St Francis) 2-0. They sealed a semi-final place with a 2-1 win over the United Soccer Academy when Grant and Brinkhurst were again on target.

Brinkhurst scored twice, with defenders Louis Munnery and Josh Burgess impressing, as Bridgeview beat Woodside Flyers (Cheshire) 2-0 to reach the final.

Coach Malcolm Sowter said: "I was pleased, the boys showed that they can perform on the national scene.

"It was a reward for the effort that has gone on in recent seasons in Lewes with the successes of Wallands School and the Lewes District Schools team. It has been a pleasure to work with such a talented group of boys."
