Councillors are calling for an official investigation into the Fatboy Slim gig which attracted 250,000 people to Brighton beach.

They feel the huge event on Brighton beach on July 13 raised serious questions about safety which could apply to future outdoor spectaculars.

Leading Conservatives on Brighton and Hove City Council submitted the requests for a scrutiny review to chief executive David Panter.

They say: "A thorough review of the organisation and procedures employed for all outdoor events would certainly bring benefits in terms of safety and freedom of movement for both residents and visitors."

Tory leader Brian Oxley and councillors David Smith and Ted Kemble said the review should look at the great disruption to local people caused by the Fatboy Slim event.

They said crowd estimates should be examined as they were seriously out for the event.

Tories want to know why the event was heavily plugged on Radio 1 without the council or the emergency services' knowledge and what emergency plans were put into effect when it became clear numbers were so high.

They said better arrangements were needed with rail companies.

Access for emergency services should also be provided to ensure they could reach anyone in trouble. The council should also look at traffic control for large events.

Glass littered all over the shingle could also be a hazard to beach users for some time to come.

Labour council leaders have called for reports at the next meeting of the policy committee in September.

However, the Tories said: "We believe an open scrutiny review, with hearings in public, looking at what happened a few weeks ago would provide valuable lessons for future events."
