The Competition Commission has recommended a price cap on the fees mobile operators charge each other when connecting calls from different networks.

It has written to the four mobile network operators and to Oftel, the telecoms watchdog, outlining its views on the set fees operators charge each other for rerouting calls on their networks.

They also relate to calls made from fixed landlines.

The commission says action is needed because the charges are not subject to the competitive forces present in the retail market for mobiles.

It is an interim statement only.

The commission is due to issue its final report to the director general of telecommunications in January.
