A butcher's shop could be turned into a museum if planners agree.
The building in Southdowns Park, Colwell Road, Haywards Heath, would be converted as part of a development of flats.
It is hoped it will be used to display items from the old St Francis Hospital, which treated mentally-ill patients, going as far back as the 1860s.
Haywards Heath Town Council also has town memorabilia it would like to see on display.
It will be the first time the town has had a museum but there are fears it will not be big enough to house all the material.
Richard Moon, of the Haywards Heath Society, said: "It is a museum in waiting but there is controversy with the site at Southdowns Park because it is very small and would stop any proper museum being developed.
"The ideal usage would be the chapel on the site but it may be the developers have other ideas about what to do with that."
Planning officers at Mid sussex District Council have recommended the scheme for approval and a decision will be made on Thursday.
