The opening of a multi-million-pound sport and leisure centre in Horsham has been delayed for a second time.

Contractors, who began work on the £13.5 million Pavilions in the Park complex almost a year ago will now hand over the keys to Horsham District Council in October instead of September.

It means the centre will not be open to the public until the end of November and residents of Horsham and the surrounding areas will have been without a swimming pool for almost two years.

Councillors said they were disappointed the 25-metre pool, leisure and fitness facilities would not be open on time and swimming and gym clubs would have to wait.

Councillor Alan Harris, cabinet member for leisure, education and the arts, said: "The council knows changes it has made to improve the original specification have contributed to the delay."

There will be a sophisticated drowning detection system, computerised lockers, spectator areas for more than 300 and a gymnasium.

Councillor John Charles, chairman of the project working group, said: "The building will be well worth waiting for.

"A full public opening is planned for November 30."
