Change is certainly needed in local politics and I agree with most of what Peter Poole said.

One thing I have discovered since being on Brighton and Hove City Council is that most councillors are sincere, regardless of their party.

It is the need to win arguments and paint them with the party colours that kills true democracy and real debate within the council.

As for independent voices getting anywhere, the system is clogged up with the party agendas, which include money and know-how.

We are a long way from having a council made up of people who are focused on truly local concerns and not weighed down with presenting a united facade - sorry, face - to the public.

Mr Poole noted the deselection of so-called rebels prior to council meeting.

It has continued after hard-working councillors in East Brighton have been deselected. Of course, we are told the party chooses.

The reality is a minority of Labour party ward members choose.
