Neighbours worried about noise have lost their battle against late-night opening at a new city centre media club in Brighton.

Residents had objected to an application for a daily public entertainments licence until 2am at the Koba Bar and Club in Western Road, Brighton.

But Brighton and Hove licensing committee granted the application provisionally. Conditions included installing sound insulation.

There were 13 objections from neighbours and local Labour councillor John Warmington said many more people lived nearby.

Speaking for the objectors, Michael Robarts, of Hampton Place, said a previous club had caused problems.

He said: "I heard the throbbing of the bass in my building which dates from 1823."

He added that the back of the club opened on to a car park and noise could echo around, affecting more than 50 premises.

Mr Robarts said 2am was far too late but 11 pm would be reasonable in a residential area.

Police said they would keep an eye on the area.

For Koba, Doug Simmonds said applicant Jake Kempston owned the freehold and was prepared to spend £50,000 on insulation and air conditioning. The club would be similar in concept to the Sussex Arts Club.

Mr Simmonds added that the proprietor was prepared to meet residents and discuss any problems.

Mr Kempston said there would be up to 500 members.

He added: "We are not going to have music with a heavy beat. We will not have DJs and will not raise the roof.

"We are catering for grown-ups and there doesn't seem to be anywhere for them to go at night except home."
