The Brighton Festival's lunchtime recital series opened with a sparkling recital by Belgian clarinettist Ronald von Spaendonck and pianist Alexander Tharaud.
This duet of BBC Young Generation Artists certainly make sweet music.
In Schumann's Romances, von Spaendonck's clarinet playing was beautifully sweet and poignant while Tharaud's piano equally sweetly underpinned it effortlessly and seamlessly, almost without being noticed.
Tharaud became more muscular in Brahms' first clarinet Sonata which gives equal weight to each player and in the Weber Grand Duo Concertante both were at the fore for two pieces of artistry and entertainment.
There are recitals every weekday lunchtime and if the talent remains as good as this opening one, May lunchtimes are going to be extremely good.
Von Spaendonck and Tharaud's recital was recorded by BBC Radio Three and will be featured on the station's Morning Performance programme in the week beginning May 27.
