Fifty suspected crack cocaine dealers were targeted in Eastbourne's biggest anti-drugs operation.

Almost 200 officers raided properties for evidence of the drug that police say is becoming more of a problem than heroin.

The one-day operation, code named County, started at 7am yesterday. By lunchtime 15 people had been arrested.

Officers were brought in from Lewes, Seaford and Worthing.

Divisional commander Chief Superintendent Paul Pearce said widespread use of crack cocaine in Eastbourne meant rising levels of crime to support drugs habits.

"Our message to dealers is: 'We know who you are and you don't know who we have been talking to about you."

The £50,000 operation was funded by Sussex Police, Eastbourne Crime Reduction Partnership and West Sussex Drug and Alcohol Action Team. Police say there is a proven link of drug trafficking between Eastbourne and Worthing.

In one raid, officers were armed after it was reported a suspect may have a gun.

About 40 rocks of suspected crack cocaine, which sell for about £20 each, were discovered in one house and £700 in cash was taken as evidence.
