Bexhill rider Steven Geran won the first Hove Park Series event of the new season with a solo effort.

Geran (VC Bayeux), who took the series three seasons ago, seemed untroubled by a chilly wind and stormed ahead on his own in a race held over 25 minutes, plus five laps.

Brighton's Jonathan Sharpe (Team Synergy), the Sussex cyclo-cross champion, narrowly out sprinted John Limpus (GS Stella) for second place.

The second senior race, over 20 minutes plus five laps, also produced a solo winner.

Bryan Taylor (VC Londres), the national track omnium champion, had a clear-cut win. Second place went to Sam Gardner (Excess Cycles), with Worthing's Chris McNamara (Team Synergy) in third position.

The Lewes Wanderers 65-mile road race in Ashdown Forest was won by Andrew Young. Young is currently riding as a private member of British Cycling, but he should have no difficulty finding a club now.

Adam Broyard (Arctic 2000) and Simon Richardson (Norwood) were second and third. Storrington's Mark Jones (GS Stella) finished fourth and Brighton Mitre riders Stuart Fahey and Andy Green were fifth and tenth.

Jones said: "I thought I was going to get second place but it was a long climb to the finish and I faded a bit over the last few metres."

Sussex riders had a double triumph in the Tooting BC's 40-mile hilly time trial.

Steve Dennis (East Grinstead) won the men's event in 1hr.36min. 27sec.

Lisa Thompson (IN Gear) won the women's race in 1hr.55min.2sec. Angela Nainby (East Grinstead) finished second in 1hr.56min. 43sec.

Hastings rider Peter Tadros (Interbike) won the Vegetarian CC's open 25 in Hampshire in 54min.8sec.

James Dear (In Gear) was third in 57min.20sec.

Some top riders are among the field of 115 for the Hampshire RC 10-mile event over the Fontwell course on Saturday (7am). The HQ is Walberton Hall.
