Police dog Bruce has been given Brighton and Hove's highest honour - his name displayed on the front of a city bus.

Bus bosses rustled up the sign in tribute to the dog who spent his life fighting crime.

For the next six months his name will shine alongside Adam Faith, Norman Wisdom, Des Lynam and The Who.

Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company wanted to honour the dog as it had done others who have contributed to the city.

Lettering was found from a draft version of a sign which now adorns the bus dedicated to world champion boxer Chris Eubank.

Managing director Roger French of the firm said: "We wanted to do something because we know how strongly everyone feels about Bruce.

"We were looking through the files and saw an old print-up for Chris Eubank. Bizarrely, the name has the letters B-R-U-C-E in it so we cut them out."

"It's a fitting tribute and Bruce's memory will live on."

Mr Eubank said he had been touched by Bruce's sorry tale and was pleased he had been able to help.

He said: "This is a sad story. It's sad for the boy who was bitten, for the dog, his owner and dog lovers everywhere."
