A newborn calf and its mother were rescued after falling into an East Sussex river last night.

Specialist animal rescue firefighters spent two hours working by floodlight to rescue the pair from the cold water.

East Sussex Fire Brigade's Crowborough-based animal rescue unit was dispatched to get the animals from the river on Bridge Farm, Barcombe, at 7.20pm yesterday.

It took nearly two hours to rescue the animals.

The first to be saved was the calf, which was hauled out of the river on to the bank by firefighter Stuart Morrison.

The cow was taken out in two stages, pulled first on to a riverbank and finally up into the field where it was reunited with the calf.

Farm owner Frances Foord said the day-old calf was fine and making a full recovery from its ordeal.
