Robert Sanderson, the general manager of the Dome, has recently been quoted in The Argus as claiming the refurbished concert hall is now a world-class venue.

While admitting the auditorium now has a very bright, warm look and the acoustics are brilliant, I would have to say some other areas are lacking.

The male toilet facilities, for example, are something of a disappointment.

The area itself is quite narrow and the urinals, instead of being sited on one wall, are on each side, which means that if both sides are being used there is very little room for others to get through.

There are only two cubicles, one of which is for disabled people, so this a hardly adequate.

There are no toilet paper dispensers, just a single toilet roll holder, circa 1950, with spare rolls parked on the floor behind the WC pan - not very hygienic.

In place of wash basins, there is a rather ugly, steel pig trough, above which, instead of a modern, automatic water supply, we have three old-style taps, the kind you might have in your garden or garage.

Where we might expect to have soap dispensers, we have an antiquated soap dish with an unhygienic bar of soap.

No electric hand dryers, simply a row of plastic boxes containing paper towels, most of which end up on the floor.

It would appear that most of the money, time and effort was spent on the auditorium and acoustics, to the detriment of the basic toilet facilities.

In my view, these failings are not what one expects in a concert hall which now claims to be among the world's best. We still have a long way to go.
