Two people died instantly when they were hit by trains in separate accidents at Sussex stations yesterday.

A man is believed to have fallen in front of a train at Three Bridges station, near Crawley, just after 9.30am. His body was found on the platform.

Police had to wait for the power to be shut off before they could recover the body.

In the second incident, witnesses described seeing someone fall in front of a train as it passed through Haywards Heath station.

Police were unable to tell whether the victim was male or female.

They now believe it to be a man after finding a credit card near the scene.

Police have ruled out foul play and inquests will be held.

Services between Brighton and London were severely disrupted as train operators struggled to work with just one track.

A spokesman for South Central said: "The delays were not particularly long but there were a lot of them."

He said services were expected to return to normal today.

The names of the victims have not yet been released but details have been given to the coroner.
