Soldier Anthony Winter will have the honour of representing his regiment at the Queen Mother's funeral.

Warrant Officer Winter from Brighton will be one of four members of the 9th/12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales's) to take part in the funeral march to Westminster Abbey for the service on Tuesday.

Many military regiments and services will be represented in the march and WO Winter's regiment was special to the Queen Mother as she held the honorary title of Colonel-in-Chief.

WO Winter, 36, will join colleagues chosen for the role because of his smart turn-out and availability.

Many of the 325 members of his regiment are currently on exercise in Canada.

The Queen Mother was Colonel-in-Chief of many regiments and was bestowed the title by the 9th regiment in 1936, following the coronation of her husband George VI.

She was chosen for the position because the regiment is a cavalry regiment and she loved horses and racing.

The 9th regiment was amalgamated with the 12th in 1960 and she continued as the Colonel-in-Chief, making many official and informal visits to the regiment, whose official base is in Bergen-Hohne in north Germany.

Her last visit was in July 2000, when she presented the regiment with its guidon - an official flag bearing the regiment's battle honours.

A spokesman for the regiment said: "She would always talk to the soldiers and their families but was also interested in the older members, particularly those from her generation.

"Her death was a very sad occasion for the regiment."
